Training

As a force, we’re in a constant state of readiness. This requires a lot of training, both at the start of your career and right through your time with us. The normal training commitment involves weekly training nights, Thursdays 19.30 -21.30, some weekends and a two-week annual training period. As well as gaining lots of useful knowledge, you’ll develop self-discipline, leadership and teamwork skills.  Many of the skills you develop through the Royal Naval Reserve will be transferable to your civilian career.

Whatever path you choose in the Royal Naval Reserve, you’ll always be learning new skills, having new experiences and developing confidence.

Ratings

The first 20 weeks will focus on background naval knowledge and fitness. You’ll be issued with basic uniform items and a New Entry Taskbook. Over the course of this phase, we’ll help you to develop physically and grow in confidence.  You will then complete an intensive two-week course at HMS Raleigh near Plymouth. You’ll meet other Reservists and take part in classroom work, physical activities and a passing-out parade. The courses run several times a year.

With your initial training complete, it’s time to start your job role training.

Officers

As a potential officer, you’ll have a different path.  After initial selection and training you’ll spend two weeks at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. It’s a tough course – long hours with mental and physical challenges – but you’ll be well prepared. And when it’s over, you’ll “pass out” as a Young Officer.  You will then complete a Junior Officer Taskbook and spend two weeks sea time in a Royal Naval Warship to prepare you for Fleet Board, your professional exam.  On passing Fleet Board you will earn your commission and it’s time to start your job role training.
