LS Brickell - Bowers

Name: Christopher Brickell-Bowers

RNR Occupation: LH WARSEA(RES)

Full Time Occupation: Senior Commissioning Engineer

Home Town: Lancaster, Lancashire

Date Joined RNR: Spring 2005

Hobbies: Keeping Fit, Football (Man City!), Car and General Sports.

Why did you join the RNR?

I joined the RNR after leaving the full time RN to attend university. It was my intention to return full time as an engineering officer but had the opportunity of a fresh challenge in a civilian occupation within the ship building industry. I therefore stayed with the RNR and I am now looking forward to advancing myself within the organisation.

RNR Goals and ambitions:

I am now fully qualified as a petty officer and I am looking to attain this rate as soon as the opportunity become available. As stated, I was looking to become a full time officer but I feel I can be best used in the RNR as a rating so will be continuing to progress through the lower deck towards Chief Petty Officer and maybe even Warrant Officer!

What have you done in the RNR?

Due to being a full time student I haven’t yet had the opportunity to mobilise with the RNR, but I have kept myself in date for all the relevant courses that will allow me to such as first aid, damage control, leadership and several weapons courses. I have had to re-train in the role of WARSEA(RES) as I was a marine engineer in the submarine service and we have no submariners or engineers in the RNR but I have managed in 5 years to re-qualify up to the rate of Petty Officer which I think is good going! Aside from this, I was a member of the 2009 RNR Field Gun Crew which was very very rewarding. This is something I definitely will be doing again and encourage anyone and everyone to have a go!

What is the Best thing about the RNR?

The feeling that your doing something worthwhile, that you’re able to do your bit. If I don’t do it, who will and why should I expect someone else to look after my interests if I’m not willing to do it myself? But the best thing about the RNR is the people, by a long way.  Like minded and salt of the earth!
